The Castle features a frontal curtain wall flanked by round towers withan imposing central gatehouse .It dates from the 14th century and is built of rose coloured sandstone.The castle was the stronghold of the Douglas family and withstood sieges until 1651 when General Monk dismantled it during the Cromwellian occupation.
