Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven. Beautiful location of peninsula from South. View from the South of the Castle standing on a stupendous rocky promintory 2 miles from Stonehaven. Initially the site of a Pictish "Dun",a church was consecrated in 1276 but by 1297 Dunnottar was held by the English and then stormed by William Wallace. In 1336 it was again seized by the English only to be regained by the Scottish Regent,Sir Andrew de Moray and destroyed.By the end of the 14th century it lay in the hands of Sir William Keith,Great Marischal of Scotland, who built the castle on it.In 1574 the Priest's House was erected along with the defences at the entrance.By 1651 the English were back and the siege of the Castle that was to last 8 months ended in surrender. The Regalia of Scotland ,however, was saved by being smuggled out and hidden beneath the pulpit in Kineff Parish Church. In May 1685 during Monmouth's rebellion 122men and 45 women were imprisoned in the dungeons and many died. After the Jacobite rising the Castle was forfeited and in 1718 was dismantled. The systematic repair and excavation of the ruins was undertaken by Vicountess Cowdray in 1925.
